Perfume perfume, perfume. Derived from the Latin phrase per (through) fumus (smoke). Perfume has been an integral part of our society right from as far back as 3000BC. Egyptians are the first documented in history to have used scents such as myrrh and frankincense in conjunction with ceremonies and religious rituals. From Egyptians to Persians, Greeks, Romans, Eastern Cultures and right through to today's modern times perfume has continued its evolution.
Within the cosmetics industry perfume is estimated to be valued at around 25 billion for the year 2006. So how long was it to be before our icon celebrities caught on to the money making craze.
In June of 1987, British actress Elizabeth Taylor released her first perfume "Passion". A sensual, romantic, and elegant oriental scent, critics marked the fragrance as doomed from the word go. Elizabeth Taylor however, believed they had found a niche market and in 1991 Elizabeth released her second fragrance "white diamonds". White Diamonds became an international success. The scent still remains a strong contender within the market today. Elizabeth did not abandon her new found money maker at that, she further released black pearls, Diamonds and Sapphires, Diamonds and Emeralds, Forever Elizabeth, Diamond and Rubies and Gardenia. For spring 2007, Elizabeth Taylor went on to slam early critics rereleasing her fragrance "Passion" with a reimaging and new marketing campaign. Elizabeth's continuing success rattled the previous market dominators of Chanel, Estee Lauder etc. and truly earmarked the entrance of the celebrity status within the perfume industry.
A young, vibrant and sexy Jennifer Lopez decided that with the peaking of her musical career and her notability within the film industry it was now a good time to join the bandwagon. In 2002 Jennifer Lopez made her debut to the perfume market with her first fragrance "Glow by J Lo". The fresh and clean smelling scent became an over night success and the pivoting point for a serious of spin off glows such as "Miami Glow", "Love at first Glow" and "Glow after dark". Along with Jennifer's highly popular glow range, the Latino goddess also introduced a whole new body line incorporating moisturizers and bronzing products. Jennifer did not limit her perfume and cosmetic sales solely to the glow line. The business smart woman also created scents such as, "Still", "Live", "Live Luxe" and recently released her new scent for 2007 "Desire". Jennifer remains involved in the process of choosing scents for her fragrances unlike many other stars who only don their signatures to the perfume.
Former pop princess Britney Spears, decided to take lead from J. Lo and. With over 83 million records sold worldwide the teenage icon knew she had the upper hand in diversification. In 2004 Britney spears teamed up with Elizabeth Arden and endorsed her first perfume "Curious". The perfume, marketed towards her vast fan base at the time netted over one million dollars in its first year. Needless to say with such an over night success Britney and Elizabeth Arden remained in cahoots together and over the past 3 years have released fragrances, "Fantasy", "curious in control", and "Midnight fantasy". Britney's latest signature perfume "Believe" was released in September of 2007. Although Britney has been the highlight of controversial media attention for the past number of months, the bad publicity has not affected her perfume sales. Sales remain strong for the blonde mum of two I suppose it is a situation of, "oops I did it again!"
In 2000 Naomi Campbell hit the perfume market with her first fragrance "Naomi Campbell". With the easy recognizable fragrance name it attracted all those who wished to smell as beautiful as she looked. Naomi continues to use her stunning beauty to allure scent seekers and to date has released 7 scents "Naomagic", "Cat deluxe", Mystery"", "Sunset", "Paradise passion", and "Cat deluxe at night". Another celebrity supermodel who has used beauty to sell us a scent is Kate Moss. The British glamour girl released her first fragrance in August of this year which rocketed straight to the top of the celebrity perfume list. I have a feeling we have only seen the tip of Kate's scent production.
Celebrities such as actors, musicians and models are not the people to be cashing in on this little goldmine. Recently popular socialites such as Paris Hilton have also found a passion for perfume. Paris Hilton renowned for being the wild party child has become a favorite "it girl" amongst young teenagers. With her unique sense of style, stunning looks and family status, young girls from around the world strive to be her. In 2004 Paris decided to commit to her position as a celebrity with public power and created her first perfume "Paris". In a cute pink bottle adorned with a glass image of her Paris gave the public what they desired, the ability to smell like a star. Paris did not remain selfish in her creation and also created a matching masculine fragrance also named "Paris". She proceeded to introduce new perfumes to the market such as "Just me" and "Heiress". In October 2007 Paris released her fourth fragrance "Can Can". Love her or hate her, the simple fact remains Paris Hiltons name sells.
As women, we are aware of the power of a scent. Men have now also clicked on to this trend. P. Diddy launched the first males scent onto the market and celebrities such as Usher and David Beckham have been hot on his heels since.
Whether it's the beauty, fame, feminine grace, or macho strength you crave and desire, these celebrity scents are our attempt to gain it. With these sweet celebrities dominating 2.9 billion of the market and figures forecast to increase for 2008 it is safe to say, "Our sweet smelling celebs are set to stay".
